Overview
The Department of Environment and Climate Change (Labour Standards Division) is seeking input from Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
Every two years, the Provincial Government is legislated to conduct a review of the current minimum wage rate, as well as the adjustment process. The decision to adjust the minimum wage impacts employees and employers.
To ensure all perspectives are being heard and to help inform Government in its decision-making process, employees, employers, stakeholders, and the general public are invited to provide input into this review.
Background
On February 19, 2024, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change announced the 2024 Minimum Wage Review, and the intent to solicit stakeholder input on the minimum wage rate and the adjustment process for setting the minimum wage. Read more.
The minimum wage rate is a basic labour standard that establishes the lowest hourly wage that an employer can pay an employee. This requirement is mandated by law in the Labour Standards Act (the Act).
The minimum wage rate in Newfoundland and Labrador is $15.00 per hour, and the minimum overtime wage rate, which is established at 1.5 times the minimum wage, is $22.50 per hour. For historical information regarding the minimum wage, click here.
Labour Standards Regulations currently stipulate that on April 1 of each year, the minimum wage rate shall change based on the percentage increase to the National Consumer Price Index (CPI). On April 1, 2024, the increase will bring the minimum wage in Newfoundland and Labrador to $15.60 per hour. Read more here.
