10-Year Agriculture Strategy

Overview

Local agriculture helps feed our communities, create jobs, support rural areas, and strengthen Newfoundland and Labrador's economy.

Farmers, food producers, processors, retailers, distributers, transportation companies, and community organizations all help people get access to safe, nutritious, and locally produced food. The meaning of "local" can vary depending on where you live. In this strategy, local food means food and agricultural products produced in Newfoundland and Labrador.

We aim to strengthen connections between producers and consumers across the province. We also want to increase how much food is grown and made in Newfoundland and Labrador, make it easier to find, and increase consumption of locally grown and produced food.

Today, Newfoundland and Labrador's agriculture sector supports hundreds of farms and employs more than 6,000 direct and indirect workers during peak seasons. In 2025, the industry reported more than $165 million in total farm cash receipts.

While the sector makes an important contribution to our province, we are not producing enough of the food we eat. There is room to grow the industry.  The Provincial Government remains committed to working with farmers, food producers and local retailers to grow the province’s farming and agrifoods industry and produce more local and affordable food for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

Global food systems are becoming less reliable and climate-related challenges continue to affect how food is produced and distributed. This makes it more important than ever to grow, produce, and supply food locally.  By working together, we can make it easier for new farmers to get started, produce more local food, extend the growing season, and build a more resilient food system that can better cope with disruptions. To get there, we need a plan.

The future of agriculture in Newfoundland and Labrador is ripe with opportunities. To help guide it, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is developing a 10-Year Agriculture Strategy. It will set out a long-term vision, priorities and actions to support sustainable growth, innovation, competitiveness, and resilience across the agriculture and food system. It will also help guide future policy, program, and investment decisions that support farmers, food producers, businesses, and communities throughout the province.

We want to hear your views on:

  • Why producing local food matters to Newfoundland and Labradorians.
  • How farming can create jobs and support rural and regional economies.
  • Opportunities and challenges to growing more of the food we eat.
  • How to support the production of more local food now and in the future.
  • How to encourage more people to farm and help new farmers overcome challenges.
  • What priorities and actions should guide government programs, investments, and policies to produce and process food and make local food easier to get in the short, medium and long term.
  • How to build a sustainable, competitive, and resilient agriculture sector and how to measure progress over the next 10 years.

We invite everyone interested in agriculture and local food to share their ideas and views. This includes residents, farmers, food producers, processors, businesses, Indigenous Governments and Organizations, municipalities, community organizations, and industry partners.

Your ideas, experiences, and feedback will help us develop a strategy based on needs, opportunities, and priorities. What you share will help guide the future of agriculture in Newfoundland and Labrador over the next 10 years.
