Atlantic Puffins

The Atlantic Puffin, scientifically known as Fratercula arctica, is a remarkable seabird species found predominantly in the North Atlantic Ocean. With its distinctive appearance, characterized by black and white plumage, a vibrant orange beak, and strikingly expressive eyes, the Atlantic Puffin captivates both researchers and enthusiasts alike. These seabirds are members of the Alcidae family and are well-adapted to a marine lifestyle. Their wings, specifically designed for swift and agile flight underwater, enable them to dive up to 60 meters in search of small fish, their primary diet. Breeding colonies of Atlantic Puffins form on coastal cliffs and remote offshore islands, where they construct burrows to raise their young.

Their reproductive cycle and nesting behaviours have been extensively studied, shedding light on the remarkable strategies they employ to ensure successful reproduction in the challenging marine environment. As essential contributors to the coastal ecosystem, these seabirds play a vital role in nutrient transport and the balance of marine food chains. Despite their widespread distribution, the Atlantic Puffin faces various threats, including habitat degradation and changing sea temperatures, warranting continued scientific attention and conservation efforts to safeguard this magnificent species for generations to come.

The North Atlantic Ocean is a vast and dynamic body of water that stretches from the Arctic region in the north to the equator in the south. It is known for its significant influence on the global climate, playing a crucial role in regulating temperatures and weather patterns across North America, Europe, and beyond. With its rich biodiversity, the North Atlantic Ocean supports a diverse array of marine life, including iconic species such as the Atlantic puffin, whales, and various fish species, making it a vital ecosystem for both wildlife and human livelihoods.

Intergenerational Program Guide – Questionnaire

Intergenerational programs consist of planned activities that bring together different age groups and often involve the sharing of skills, knowledge or experiences between generations. Such programs have positive impacts on the well-being of seniors and older adults as well as younger generations. They are also a way to challenge ageism which the World Health Organization defines as the stereotypes (how we think), prejudice (how we feel) and discrimination (how we act) towards others or oneself based on age. Ageism is not just aimed at seniors; it is experienced across the lifespan including by children, youth and young adults. With Newfoundland and Labrador’s aging population, it is imperative that we consider how to improve social and community inclusion for seniors, including through intergenerational engagement opportunities. The following questionnaire will assist the Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development in developing an Intergenerational Program Guide to promote and support intergenerational programs and activities in Newfoundland and Labrador.
