Overview
The Children, Youth and Families Act (the Act) was proclaimed on June 30, 2019, and provides legislative authority for the delivery of services to children and youth in need of protective intervention in Newfoundland and Labrador. As noted in section 8 of the Act, the purpose of this legislation is to promote the safety and well-being of children and youth who are in need of protective intervention by offering, where available and appropriate, services that are designed to maintain, support and preserve the family where it is in the best interests of children and youth.
The Department of Families and Affordability is seeking input and feedback specific to five key areas:
- Indigenous child welfare
- Permanency planning
- Outcomes for children and youth in care
- Youth transitioning to adulthood
- Information sharing
