The Newfoundland and Labrador minimum wage is an important decision made by the Provincial Government, one that impacts tens of thousands of employees, employers, and the overall economy in the province. Every two years, the Provincial Government is legislated to conduct a review of the current minimum wage rate, as well as the adjustment process.
As part of the review process, the independent Minimum Wage Review Committee is inviting stakeholders and members of the public to provide input into the review and inform the recommendations that will be made to the Provincial Government about the minimum wage rate and adjustment process going forward.
The Committee thanks you in advance for your participation in this important conversation.
Background
On January 24, 2022, the Minister Responsible for Labour announced the appointment of a five-member, independent Minimum Wage Review Committee to gather stakeholder input and report to the Minister with observations, findings and recommendations on the minimum wage rate and the current adjustment process for setting the minimum wage. The minimum wage rate is a basic labour standard that establishes the lowest hourly wage that an employer can pay an employee. This requirement is mandated by law in the Labour Standards Act (the Act).
Currently, the minimum wage rate in Newfoundland and Labrador is $12.75 per hour, and the minimum overtime wage rate, which is established at 1.5 times the minimum wage, is $19.13 per hour. For historical information regarding the minimum wage, please click here.
Labour Standards Regulations currently stipulate that on April 1 of each year the minimum wage shall change based on the percentage increase to the National Consumer Price Index (CPI). On April 1, 2022, the increase will bring the minimum wage in the province to $13.20 per hour. Click here to read more.
