The election process in Newfoundland and Labrador is administered under the authority of the Elections Act, 1991. The Act is now 30 years old and needs to be updated. The COVID-19 pandemic stressed this point, bringing to light the potential issues with the voting process outlined in the legislation.
The Department of Justice and Public Safety is reviewing the Elections Act, 1991 to find ways to update it. This past winter the Department hosted an online questionnaire on engageNL which identified many of the issues related to the provincial voting process in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Department now wishes to gather ideas on how the legislation can be improved. This information will be used to help modernize the Elections Act, 1991, making voting a more accessible process for all.
The Department of Justice and Public Safety is hosting a series of sessions over the coming months to gather information on how to improve the provincial voting process in Newfoundland and Labrador. A list of scheduled sessions can be found below. Additional sessions across the province will be added as dates and locations are confirmed.
We thank you in advance for your participation. If you have any questions related to these sessions please contact Nicole Porter at nicoleporter@gov.nl.ca or 709-729-1336.
How will your input be used?
The information received will be analyzed by the Department of Justice and Public Safety and a review provided to the All Party Committee to Modernize the Elections Act, 1991. All feedback will be considered when reviewing the Elections Act, 1991 to inform potential changes to the legislation.
