Emergency Health Services and Community Paramedicine Legislation

Overview

Government is seeking input on the development of new Emergency Health Services and Community Paramedicine legislation to govern the Provincial Road Ambulance Program. 

It is anticipated that the new legislation will authorize the Department of Health and Community Services to license ambulance operators, set operator responsibilities, determine the training levels of paramedics, identify the medical procedures paramedics can perform, define what constitutes an emergency medical vehicle, and establish provincial ambulance standards.

Consultation with stakeholders is an important element of the process to ensure the legislation is effective and relevant. Province-wide consultations will begin on September 17, 2018. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador encourages all interested stakeholders to participate in the consultation process. There are two ways to participate:
