Legislative Review of the Elections Act, 1991

Please note: Questions marked with an asterix (*) indicates a required question.

The election process in Newfoundland and Labrador is administered under the Elections Act, 1991. The Act sets out the parameters under which a provincial election can be run. The Department of Justice and Public Safety is currently reviewing the Elections Act, 1991 in an effort to modernize the Act. The Department is seeking your input on how the voting process can be improved for provincial elections.

Provincial elections in Newfoundland and Labrador are carried out under the authority of the Elections Act, 1991. Elections primarily involve in-person voting on polling day, as well as advance polls and mail-in, special ballot options. Changes to the voting process were made during the 2021 provincial general election in response to the increased risk of community spread of COVID-19 in the province (i.e., suspension of in-person voting, extension of mail-in, special ballot submission deadline, etc.).
